Udta Punjab: Drug overdose deaths among students in state, abroad paint grim picture
The drug overdose problem in Punjab and abroad is claiming the lives of several students. As many as 200 drug overdose deaths have been reported during the AAP’s regime alone. The Punjab government has plans to decriminalize drugs and the addicts caught with narcotics will be sent to rehab centers.
Twenty-two-year-old Mayank Yadav from the Paras Ram Nagar locality of Bathinda was found dead on June 24 due to a drug overdose. Similarly, on the previous day, twenty-four-year-old Arshdeep Singh from Tangwali village also lost his life under similar circumstances and his body was recovered in the bushes of the Jessi Pau Wali area.
Another incident of drug overdose occurred on May 17, claiming the life of twenty-four-year-old Gurpreet Singh from Sangrur. He was married to an NRI woman and had plans to travel abroad. The police have arrested half a dozen drug paddlers in these cases. The menace has already claimed as many as 200 lives in the state during the Aam Aadmi Party’s regime.
In Bathinda alone, two overdose deaths have been reported within a week. Youngsters across Punjab and abroad have become victims of drug overdose.
When asked about drugs being sold within the hospital complexes, Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh was left red-faced. “Action will be taken against the person if you provide specific information. In some cases, it has come to my attention that tablets provided by the de-addiction centers were being sold by the addicts,” the minister said.
He directed the SSP Barnala to investigate if drugs are actually being sold near the government hospital.
COPS INVOLVED IN DRUG SMUGGLING
Notably, the police officers in Punjab are also actively involved in drug smuggling. The availability of narcotics and their sale under the nose of the authorities has made young Punjabis vulnerable to drug abuse.
Several police officers have been accused of facilitating the drug trade. The AAP government recently dismissed AIG Raj Jit Singh after he was booked by the Special Task Force (STF).
